ANNUAL ST. VINCENT de PAUL COLLECTION

Bishop Ger met recently with members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul regarding their Annual Christmas Appeal.  The theme of  this year’s SVP appeal is “Helping to give Families the Wonder of Christmas”. With high rents and the spiralling cost of living many families are wondering how they are going to meet all the costs associated with Christmas. The job of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, with your help, is to take this wonder and fear away from those who are struggling and replace it with the true magical wonder of Christmas. Your generous contributions will make sure that families in need can be helped. Church Gate Collections will take place Sat 7th & Sun 8th December across all parishes in Co. Wexford. All donations received locally will be used locally to help families across Co. Wexford over Christmas.

CHURCH ALTARS & DECORATION

Thanks to the ladies from Knockreigh for looking after the Church & Altars for the month of November, it is now the turn of parishioners from Oldcourt for the month of December

ST. PADRE PIO MASS

Fr. John Mockler of the Padre Pio Institute and servants of the Suffering concelebrated a special Mass on Fri 22nd Nov in St. Abban’s Church. The co-celebrants were Fr. Nolan, Fr. Bernard Cushen & Fr. Michael Byrne. Fr. John began with a Holy Hour of Adoration and Healing and recitation of the Rosary. Confessions were available. During his homily Fr. John spoke about the importance of the Rosary in St. Pio’s life and its significance in St. Pio’s healing  ministry.  Fr. John, from Askeaton in Limerick, fascinated us with some of the miracles he himself has witnessed. At the end of Mass everyone present received a blessing from a First Class Relic of St. Pio. There was a large gathering with people from all over the county. A box of petitions which people were invited to write were brought to the Altar for Mass. Music and  a tuneful choir enhanced the liturgy as did a special holy space dedicated to St. Pio which was illuminated and placed in front of the altar. Sacramentals such as St. Benedict Crosses, Rosaries, leaflets and St. Martin magazines were displayed in Porch and freely available. It was organized by the Adamstown Prayer Group.

THOMAS MOORE (1779 – 1852)

Born 28th May in Aungier St. Dublin, the author of Moore’s Melodies, which were drawn from ancient Irish traditional music. John McCormack, the Irish tenor popularised many of these melodies. Thomas Moore’s wife and children all predeceased him.

Oft in the Stilly NIght evokes the sadness which he experienced in his grief, left only with sad memories in old age. Like so many people who are familiar with tragedy our Chrisiian faith reassures us that ‘eye has not seen, nor ear heard, what God has in store for those who love Him”

Oft, in the Stilly Night

Oft, in the stilly night,

Ere slumber’s chain has bound  me,

Fond memories  brings the light

Of other days around  me;

The smiles, the tears,

Of boyhood’s years,

The words of love then spoken;

The eyes that shone,

Now dimm’d are gone,

The cheerful hearts now broken!

Thus, in the stilly night,

Ere slumber’s chain  hath bound me,

Sad memory brings  the light

Of other days around me.

When I remember all

The friends, so link’d together,

I’ve seen around me fall,

Like leaves in wintry weather;

I feel like one

Who treads alone

Some banquet-hall deserted,

Whose lights are fled

Whose garlands dead,

And all but he departed!

Thus, in the stilly night,

Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,

Sad memory brings the light

Of other days around me.

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

To feel rich, count the things that you have that money can’t buy.

A SMILE – Hush money

Bill: “You don’t  mean to say it cost you €7,000 to have your family tree looked up?”

Ben: “No, €2,000 to have it looked up and €5,000 to have it hushed up”
