EULOGY READ AT TOMMY O’CONNOR’S FUNERAL MASS ON MONDAY 16th DEC BY HIS NEPHEW MATTY.

For you who don’t know me, I’m Matty O’Connor, Nephew and Godson of Uncle Tommy’s. Tommy was a man, loved by everyone young and old. He was a son, father, uncle, grandfather, godfather and a whiskey connoisseur!

Born into a family of 5 boys and 10 girls in Monachee where he developed his love of farming. And farming 71 years ago was a horse and plough era, where Tommy cared for his horses, animals and the land. In 1965 he met the love of his life at a dance in Duncannon. Tommy was always a dapper dresser so I’m sure Kathleen had no problem picking him out from the crowd. Married in 1968 they moved to Kitshelin in Tipperary where their blue eyed boy Philp was born. From there they came back to Major Lambert’s estate where Tommy continued with his love of horses, visiting Newmarket Sales on many occasions from where he took the trip down to London to visit his sisters Theresa, Mary & Nellie. Having moved back to Wexford his 3 children John, Claire and Caroline were born. Working with Coillte, home then became Adamstown, where he very much became part of the local community. Actively taking part in the annual Adamstown Agricultural Show where they tell me he wouldn’t even allow the local P.P. in without paying!!

And as always after the hard day’s work Tommy always like to go for one knowing that he always had Kathleen at his side if he had more than one. His retirement kept Tommy busy with herding right into his late 80’s. He also had a love of dancing and was well known to be light on his feet. Kathleen and he travelled in latter years, visiting New York and Lourdes – his favourite place of al as his faith was important to him. Today I must acknowledge the love and care he received from his wife Kathleen, his children, grandchildren, kind neighbours, relative and friends. But he was easy to care for as Tommy was an out and out gentleman. Before taking Tommy to his final resting place, I wish to read the following reflection.

              Don’t remember me with sadness,

              Don’t remember me with tears,

              Remember all the laughter,

              We’ve shared throughout the years.

              My life’s been full,

              I savoured much,

              Good Friends, good time,

              A loved one’s touch.

So please don’t be unhappy just

              Because I’m out of sight,

              Remember that I’m with you,

              Each morning, noon and night.

COMMUNION REFLECTION

Vincent van Gogh died at the age of thirty-seven. The following day eight of his friends came and decked the small room where his coffin lay with some of his paintings.

It was only then they realised how beautiful they were.

Vincent had a very difficult life.

He knew loneliness, poverty, and mental illness, with few friends to support him.

But now that he was dead, as often happens, everybody was full of praise for his talents.

He once said:

‘I think that those who do not lose courage, and who do not become indifferent, ripen through it.

One must bear hardship in order to ripen.

Most people who know me consider me a failure.

Still, life is only a kind of sowing, the harvest is not here’

Today his canvasses are almost beyond price.

Yet only one of them was sold while he was still alive.

It was sold for a few hundred francs.

Vincent certainly did not reap an earthly harvest.

SYMPATHY

We extend our deepest sympathy to Mary & Danny Doyle and family, Glenour on the sudden death of Mary’s sister, Kathleen Maher, Aclare, Graiguenamanagh on Saturday 4th January. Sympathy also to her husband John, sons Fr. Seán & Thomas, extended family, neighbours and friends. Her funeral Mass was celebrated in Duiske Abbey on Monday last followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – What Money Can Buy:

A bed but not sleep.                   A clock but not time.

A book but not knowledge.         A position but not respect.

Medicine but not health.             Amusements but not happiness.

                 Acquaintance but not friendship.

                 Obedience but not faithfulness.

A house but not a home.

CAPUCHIN DAY CENTRE – Background Information

Since 1969, the Capuchin Day Centre has been providing hot meals, food parcels, clothing and day care facilities for people who are homeless, six days a week, completely free of charge. From very small beginnings it has grown to be the biggest food centre in the city and now provides over 1,000 meals each day for people who are homeless and in need. On Wednesdays we distribute up to 1,450 food parcels in Dublin for people who are on the poverty threshold. Every day is a challenge here in the Day Centre and while the number of people in need of our service is growing, we Capuchins know that with the help of God working through kind people like you, we will be able to continue this vital service and plan for the future. Every day we thank God for your generosity and it strengthens our own Chrisian commitment to the work. On behalf of the people who attend the Centre and the Irish Capuchin Franciscan Order, we offer renewed thanks and our prayers for God’s blessings on you and all you hold dear.
