A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Two things define you. Your patience when you have nothing, and your attitude when you have everything.

FREEDOM’S PRICE

“Do you want a man for president,

who’s seasoned through and through

But not so doggone seasoned that he

won’t try something new

A man who’s old enough to know and old

enough to do, well

It’s up to you, it’s up to you, it’s simply up to you”

So went John F. Kennedy’s jaunty ad campaign in 1960 that helped him to become the 35th President of the United States as well as at 43, the youngest. After spending just 177 days in office Kennedy’s dramatic assassination at 12:30pm on the 11th November, 1963 shocked the world. Most people can remember where they were when they heard the tragic news. Just prior to the despicable deed fellow passengers in the presidential limousine were Governor Connally and his wife. Mrs. Connally, commenting on the happy crowds lining the route of the motorcade remarked, ‘Mr. President, you can’t say Dallas doesn’t love you’ Kennedy replied, ‘No, you certainly can’t. These words were Kennedy’s last words.

Later coincidences between the Kennedy and Lincoln assassination were bound to surface. Lincoln’s secretary named Kennedy told him not to go to Ford’s Theatre. Kennedy’s secretary Evelyn Lincoln warned him not to go to Dallas. The names Lincoln and Kennedy each have seven letters. Both assassins, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, were known by triplicate numbers, comprising fifteen letters. Booth ran from a theatre and was caught in a warehouse – Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theatre. Both of the presidents’ successors were named Johnson, one born in 1808 the other in 1908. One mind-numbing factor puts the Dallas outrage into context. Kennedy was the first President to carry on his person at all times the so-called nuclear biscuit. A credit-card sized piece of plastic a president needs to order the launch of nuclear weapons. THE COURAGE TO BE HONEST (Sr. Melannie S.N.D.)

I was having lunch at a restaurant with my 84-year-old mother one warm summer day, two young attractive girls walked by wearing rather skimpy outfits. After they passed, my mother leaned forward and said: “Did you see the way those two girls were dressed?” I nodded. She shook her head disapprovingly.

Then, a few moments later, she started to grin. She leaned forward again and said, “You know, maybe I’m just a little jealous!” And we both chuckled out loud. When we think of courage, we often think of battlefields, hospital rooms and courthouses. But my mother displayed a different kind of courage that day; the courage to be honest with herself. She traced her disapproval to its roots of our tendency to judge others. What might be lurking there, jealousy, fear, hurt, anger, loneliness, fatigue?

Loving God, give me the courage to be honest with you, with others and with myself.

THERE IS NO GOD HERE IN HOLLYWOOD

‘Our revels now are ended’

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air:

And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,

The cloud-capp’d towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep.

(William Shakespeare. From The Tempest, Act 4, Scene1)
