VERY REV CANON TOMMY DOYLE R.I.P.

Fr. Tommy was born in Monagrena, Boolavogue in 1936, and received his education at Boolavogue N.S, St. Peter’s College and St. Patrick’s Seminary. He was ordained at St. Peter’s College on 3rd June 1962. His first appointment was to Ballyfad June ’62 – March ’70. He next served at Courtnacuddy, March 1970 – September 1990. He replaced Fr. Hartley P.P. in Adamstown on 29th September 1990 and

ministered here until he was transferred to Craanford in September 1999.

He was a staunch member and supporter of the Pioneer Association and wrote of his experiences in the Pioneer Movement for the Centenary Souvenir Book in 1997. He was very active in the Adamstown Branch during his time here and gave his time in travelling to many places with young and older members on many occasions.

When the Adamstown I.C.A. branch finished in the early 1990’s the torch of the Senior Citizens was taken over by Fr. Doyle, Nurse Codd and local stalwarts Betty O’Shea, Callie Doyle and Nancy Bradley. The group enjoyed many activities and outings with  Fr. Doyle and travelled to many part of the country, he enjoyed taking photographs on the Senior Citizen’s outings. The Senior citizens were deeply appreciative of his kindness, compassion and care of the older members of the Adamstown community and have many happy memories of his time in the Parish.

May he rest in peace.

In 1992 Pope John Paul 11 instituted the World Day of the Sick to be held on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes, we celebrate the 30th World Day of the Sick this Friday 11th February.

MARY’S POWER OF INTERCESSION STORY

One day God made a tour of heaven to check out the recent arrivals. He was taken aback at the quality of many of those allowed in and he went out to confront St. Peter about it.

‘You’ve let me down again’ he told Peter.

‘What’s wrong now? ‘ Peter asked.

‘You have let a lot of people in that shouldn’t be there’

‘I didn’t let them in’ said Peter.

‘Well who did?

‘When I turned them away at the front door, they went round the back and your mother let them in.’

That is only a story for children to let them see the importance that Mary has in our lives, and how powerful her intercession is before God.  Mary’s importance, Mary’s power of intercession comes from her role as Mother of God.

(Fr. Andrew Greeley  – St. Martin’s Magazine)

IRISH LINK WITH LOURDES – (Mary Kenny, Irish Catholic)

The author Colm Keane, who has recently died aged 70, wrote many interesting works on spiritual themes, but his book on Lourdes The Village of Bernadette: The Irish Connection (written with Una O’Hagen, his wife) is a terrific history of Ireland’s link with Lourdes going back to the 1870’s

The Irish pilgrims to Lourdes have included the playwright Brendan Behan, in a picaresque journey from Paris, and the poet Seamus Heaney, who was a brancardoer – a stretcher-bearer, at Lourdes as a young man. The Fianna Fáil politician, P.J. Little, a long-time Minister for Post and Telegraphs, served so diligently at Lourdes that he was decorated by the French authorities. Lourdes has attracted some fine historians, but Colm Keane, with his co-author, provide a unique record of the Irish perspective.

(John Scally – Beautiful Thoughts for Beautiful Minds)

A lecturer at a theological college who informed his class that the subject of his next lecture would be the sin of deceit and that, by way of preparation, he would like them all to read the seventeenth chapter of St. Mark’s Gospel. When the lecture began, he asked how may had followed his instructions. Most of them raised their hands: “Thank you” said the lecturer. “It is to people like you that today’s lecture is especially addressed. There is no seventeenth chapter in Mark’s Gospel.
