ADAMSTOWN TIDY TOWNS

Adamstown Tidy Towns would like to thank Patrick Rochford aka Rochford PVC Fascia Soffit & Guttering for constructing and installing a Canopy/Roof in Adamstown Community Garden. We would also like to thank our volunteers Pawel, Ray, Paddy, Ian and Declan who moved the large water tank   into the Commuinity Garden itself, it was previously situated behind the school and it  was quite difficult to carry water to the garden & tunnel for summer plant watering.

This project was made possible through the Pobal grant.

Currently there are Horticultural classes in the Community garden on Wednesdays. If you are interested, please contact Carmen from Raheen FRC on 085 1356610.

The Community Garden is not just about sowing but also an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

There are also Community Gardens in Raheen, Newbawn and Clonroche.

RETIREMENT GOOD WISHES

We extend our good wishes to Noel Colfer, who has been part of our community since 2008 when he took up the position of butcher in Cullen’s Gala shop. Noel always carried out his job with a smile, always helpful and caring, loved the bit of banter, nothing was too much trouble, even if you changed your mind several times.

Management, staff and customers in Cullen’s will miss him.

Enjoy your retirement Noel and thanks from your friends in Adamstown.

We also wish AJ every good wish in his new career, he had worked in Cullen’s Gala for the past year.

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP GER NASH & DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL.

As ‘the People of God’ we each play our part in shaping the future of the Church. The synodal journey that we begin invites us to look at our own sense of faith and that of others.

A question we can ask is: “What does it mean to follow

the way of Christ in our everyday life?

Our weekly messages serve as a guide along the synodal path.

PEG ROCHE, BALLYSHANNON    R.I.P.

Patrick and Anthony, also to her brother and sisters, extended family, neighbours and friends. A DRIVING TEST 40 YEARS AGO

An elderly parishioner recalls her driving test in London in the 1970’s

A driving instructor had given her about 70 driving lessons costing £3 each, after all the cost and much discussion about the Galteemore, no driving test was in sight, after much frustration she went to a new instructor. He castigated her for the bad habits she had acquired. I will give you three lessons, he said and if you’re not up to the standard by then forget about it. After the third lesson he entered her for the driving test, then on the morning of the test the instructor called to her home. He made a beeline for the drinks cabinet, and he poured out a large Gin and Orange and to her surprise he thrust the glass into her hand. She gratefully accepted. He then advised her to suck some mints to conceal the smell of the alcohol. The instructor then took her to the test centre and left her to wait her turn for the test. In due course an elderly gentleman, who was the examiner, summoned her. They both got into the vehicle and he told her to follow his instructions, which she did faithfully with the exception of one hand signal. The test concluded in a half hour. She was convinced that she had failed, but much to her surprise the examiner told her that she was now a proud possessor of a driving licence. In the meantime, her husband was unaware that she had changed her allegiance to a new instructor. Following her success she arrived home

triumphantly accompanied by her driving instructor.

Now, he said I think I deserve a drink!

Next day she took out her husbands car for a victory run to the West End, on her husbands return she proudly presented her certificate of competence and announced that she had passed her driving test and recounted the tale of her journey to the West End.

Footnote: Never ever drink and drive.

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (Kuantzu)

If you give a man a fish, he will eat once,

If you teach a man to fish, he will eat for the rest of his life,

If you are thinking a year ahead, sow seed.

If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree.

If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people.

By sowing seed, you will harvest once.

By planting a tree, you will harvest tenfold.

By educating the people, you will harvest one hundred fold.

A QUOTATION – (Daniel O’Connell)

Nothing is politically right which is morally wrong.
