The weekly “30” Card Game continues in the Community Centre on Friday February 5th @ 9pm. Thanks to the ladies for the teas last week. There is €220 in prize money on offer each night. Catering Friday February 5th will be: Mary Delaney, Sheelagh Delaney, Rosie McEvoy & Catherine O’Rourke, Brocurra. Proceeds going to Parish Funds.

There was no Jackpot winner on Monday 11th January. The winning numbers were 10-20-21-24. Two matched three numbers: Peter Lawlor c/o Callie Doyle and Fredy Murphy, 27 Longstone Drive c/o Pat Martin. Next draw will take place on February 1st in the Boro Inn, Clonroche.

A parish meeting was held in the community centre last Tuesday night 26th January with Fr Robert Nolan P.P presiding. The meeting was called to discuss new proposals from the cemetery committee. After much discussion it was decided that headstones would be erected back –to –back for all the burials from here on. There were 16 votes in favour with 4 votes against the proposal. A new cement path and other cemetery improvements are being planned by the committee over the coming months.

Adamstown Variety Group are holding a cabaret in Cullen’s Lounge on Saturday 6th February @ 9:30pm in aid of staging “TOPS” Light refreshments, Music, Dance, Fun & Door Prize. Admission €3.00.

The monthly meeting of the ICA was held on Wednesday 20th January. The president Mary Lawlor welcomed the members. A vote of sympathy was passed with Callie Doyle on the death of her brother, Sean Power and with Eileen Thorpe on the death of her mother in law, Mrs. Josie Thorpe. A minutes silence was observed in memory of Mrs. Thorpe who was for many years a very faithful member of ICA. The year 2010 is the centenary year of the founding of the ICA in Bree and a number of events are being organised to commemorate the occasion. On the 7th May an Ecumenical Service will be held in Bree Church, followed by a tree planting ceremony. In the afternoon there will be a buffet reception in Bree Community Centre. Admission to this reception will be €15. Anybody wishing to attend should please contact Cait Bradley on 087 6964082 before February 5th. Sixteen guild members enjoyed an evening out on Wednesday 27th with a meal in Whitford House followed by a visit to the cinema which proved to be a great success. Next meeting Wednesday 15th February.   

Minister for education visited Colaiste Abbain on Friday 22nd January where he met with the principal Senan Lillis, Bridget Cadogan, Duputy Principal, Board of Management, Parents Association, Councilors, Oirachtas members, members of the VEC, Staff members. Colaiste Abbain has been campaigning for a substantial extension for over ten years and despite approval form the Department in March 2005 no finance has been allocated. The principal Senan Lilliis said the building will not be going ahead this year, but we will keep knocking on doors until we get our extension. We are all happy at Colaiste Abbain that the Minister took the time to visit the school.

The Annual General Meeting of the local St. Abbans Adamstown GAA club took place last Thursday night. The secretary Helen Furlong gave a good delivery on the happenings at the various age groups over the past year and prospects for the season ahead. The treasurer Dympna Furlong delivered a comprehensive financial report that showed the club to be in reasonable position money wise while also making known that fund raising remains necessary at all times. The following officers were elected to run the affairs of the Coiste Na Nog section of St. Abbans G.A.A club in the year ahead.

Club membership for both the adult and underage section of the local club is now overdue and can be paid immediately to any of the club officers.

At the request of Bishop Denis Brennan, a collection will be taken up in the porch of the church after Mass on Saturday February 6th and Sunday February 7th. We thank you in anticipation of your generosity.

Sympathy is extended to Lar & Ann French and family, Oldcourt on the death of Lar’s mother Mrs. Elizabeth French. Elizabeth had reached the great age of 95 and she had been a patient of Cailford nursing home for a number of years. She is predeceased by her husband John and daughter Marian. Her funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday last 23rd January with burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. Sympathy also to her son –in law Paddy and all her grandchildren.
May she rest in peace.
