DARKNESS INTO LIGHT

Henri Nouwen was a wonderful writer and counsellor, but he suffered from periods of darkness and low self-esteem. During one of his low periods, he met Mother Teresa of Calcutta. He told her of his problem. She gave him a double piece of advice. Never do anything you know to be wrong… just as Jesus said to keep his commandments. And  her second advice was to spend one hour each day adoring the Lord.

She assured him he would be alright. He took her advice and later wrote about it. “She  punctured my big balloon of complex self-complaints. She pointed me beyond myself and brought me to a place of real healing” Keep away from any form of badness and find time every day to be at home with God.

Jesus promises us a spiritual home filled with joy. “I have told you all this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy complete”

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Every day is a new beginning.

Treat it that way.

Stay away from what might have been and look

at what can be.

SEA OF GALILEE

With the towns and villages, the roads and Jerusalem itself as they are now but not then, sitting in a small boat on the Sea of Galilee, someone said: This is what Jesus saw.

A lake, though often called a sea, and different names, Galilee, Tiberias,  Genneseret – or today, Yam Kinneret, is the lowest freshwater lake on earth. About the size of Lough Corrib, it is a metre higher nowadays because of water controls. With waters from many streams but 75% from the Jordan, it becomes the primary source of drinking water and a place of recreation and tourism. Then on the south end, the river Jordan again flows down to the Dead Sea. Galilee and its lake is the scene from the early life and ministry of Jesus. At the beginning of his ministry he calls the two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew, James and John to follow him and then Matthew or Levi at the tax collector’s desk. On its shores, he feeds 5,000. He sleeps through a storm on the lake and walks on water.

The lake is where the Risen Lord meets Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples and where he hosts a seashore breakfast. This is where, today’s pilgrim will be given St. Peter’s fish, see a first century boat, again it’s Peter’s and maybe experience one of the sudden and violent storms, caused by cold air rushing down from the hills and meeting the warm air rising from the lake.
