EULOGY READ AT M.J. BOOTH’S FUNERAL MASS BY HIS SISTER BETTY on Saturday 13th August 2022

I would like to welcome you all and thank you for coming here today to help us celebrate MJ’s life.

We loved M.J. as a brother, an uncle and a great uncle, in the words of one of his favourite songs – he was

‘Simply the Best’.  But he was not just our MJ, he was your MJ. He was Adamstown’s MJ. MJ loved Adamstown in every way; he loved its sports teams, its community clubs, its societies, its organisations, sounds like a Big City, not just Adamstown. MJ loved his community and his community loved him, and you are all part of the reason MJ was so unique, courageous and talented.

MJ had a full life, he was born here 63 years ago, went to school here, between times in hospital, in and out of hospital as many of you remember. He loved and appreciated his college life in Waterford and his short but memorable working life in Dublin. He loved football, his gardening and his art. When MJ died on Tuesday a young friend of my daughter said to me, she was star struck by him when she realized he drew Dino Monsters, Ninja Turtles and Budgie the Hellicopter. e would have He would have loved that. I think we are all a little star-struck by you MJ.

Over the last two days everyone has said to me, how the street will miss him and that is surely true.

We will all miss you MJ. The vehicular of the street will be a little less colourful without you.

Leo, Liam, Mary and I would love you all to join us after Mass and burial in the Community Centre, where he wheeled most mornings on the track.

Let us now continue with his Mass. Fr. Nolan will guide us through MJ final journey, may he rest in peace.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm.

BROTHER KEVIN RETIRES

We send our best wishes to Brother Kevin as he retires from the Capuchin Day Centre where on a daily basis they provide meals as well as care packages to tens of thousands of people since its doors opened in 1969.

When it opened first it was helping around 50 people per day, now the numbers have grown to between 300 and 500 coming for breakfast, and between 500 and 600 people looking for dinners each day. President Michael D Higgins in his tribute to Br. Kevin on his retirement said “Since founding the centre in 1969, Br Kevin has led an invaluable service that is providing essential food and compassion to those most in need in our capital city. “Pope Francis has spoken of a ‘culture of indifference’ and has challenged us all not to avert our gaze or to turn away from those who suffer on our shared planet. Br. Kevin, and those who work alongside him, in their work are meeting this challenge every day”

He is retiring to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Cork City, which is run by the Capuchin order.

God Bless Br Kevin and all his team for the work they have done to help so many people in need in our capital city.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK – On Waking

I give thanks for arriving safely in a new dawn,

For the gift of eyes, to see the world.

The gift of mind to feel at home in my life.

The waves of possibility,

Breaking on the shore of dawn,

That awaits my hunger,

And all the furtherings, this new day will bring.

(John O’Donohue – Benedíctus)
