HAGIA SOPHIA

A number of people were in Istanbul recently and one of the fascinating gems of that city is the Hagia Sophia. It is a mosque and major cultural and historical site, which was built in 537. In its time it has been a Catholic Cathedral, a mosque, a museum and it now a mosque again. The name comes from the Greek for Holy Wisdom, which refers to the second person of the Holy Trinity or Jesus Christ. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and attracted 6.5 million visitors last year.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK – A Prayer for children

Father, we thank you for the night,

And for the pleasant morning light,

For rest and food and loving care.

And all that makes the day so fair.

Help us to do the things we should,

To be to others kind and good.

In all we do, in work or play,

To grow more loving every day.  Amen.

(Rebecca Weston – Messenger Magazine)

REFLECTION: (Donal Neary SJ – Messenger Magazine)

We waste a lot of food,

We buy too much,

We are mesmerised by bargains like ‘3 for the price of 2’

The average Irish household throws out 150 kg of food waste each year.

Pope Francis on food waste:

‘Our grandparents used to make a point of not throwing away leftover food. Consumerism has made us accustomed to wasting food daily, and we are unable to see its real value…Throwing away food is like stealing from the table of those who are poor and hungry… Around 1.3 billion metric tonnes (1.43 billion tons) of food, or one third of what is produced for human consumption, gets lost or wasted every year, according to the United Nation’s food agency.’

Like Jesus, Pope Francis used dramatic language to make a point. He reminds us of something we don’t want to hear.

When we waste food, we disrespect what the earth gives us. Caring for the earth is not only about environmentalism, it is about ensuring equal distribution of the earth’s resources and being grateful each day to the earth for what it gives us.
