ADAMSTOWN I.C.A. NEWS

Last Thursday 18th April, Michael Fortune gave a talk in the Community Centre. It was a very interesting evening exploring Wexford traditions and customs. From Pisheogs, the May Bush, Traan water, May Dew & Rain to the same traditions being carried out by Irish communities in Newfoundland, Canada. MIchael covered it all. He was interested to hear stories from Adamstown residents and recorded Callie Doyle reciting The Wren verse from her youth, which can be seen on Folklore.ie. His book ‘The Folklore of Wexford’ is on sale and has some great stories about the various Wexford customs.

Michael is very passionate about Folklore, but in particular, Wexford folklore. He is organising ‘The County Wexford May Bush Festival’ in Ballindaggin from April 30th to May 4th.

A lovely evening was had by all, and tea & biscuits were provided by the ladies of the  ICA.  The ICA Federation A.G.M. will be held in Ballyfad on Monday 29th April.

BEALTAINE – MAY

The first of May is the beginning of summer. This is the light half of the year, when the sun grows to its height at midsummer and then begins to wane until, at Samhain,  the dark half of the year begins again. In the agricultural year, Bealtaine was the time when cattle were moved to the buaile or high summer pastures. All seed crops had already been planted by this time and growth was underway.

Land rentals and work contracts were renewed on the first of May and hiring fairs were held. Farmers walked the perimeter of their lands after sunset on Bealtaine Eve, stopping to acknowledge  the four directions, beginning with the east, then south,  west and north.

They would drop a little seed and water from a holy well, or some ash from the Bealtaine fire in each quarter. This was also done within the house, lighting a candle and blessing the threshold, the hearth, the four corners and then the inhabitants.

ROSARY AT KNOCKREIGH GROTTO FOR MAY

The Rosary will be recited at Knockreigh Grotto each week evening at 7.30pm for the month of May – The Month of Our Lady. This custom has been taking place for the past number of years, all welcome to come along.

“O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.”

A BLESSING FOR OUR GENEROUS DONORS

The offering of the righteous man anoints the altar, and its pleasing odour rises before the most high. The sacrifice of a righteous man is acceptable, and the memory of it will not be forgotten. Glorify the Lord generously, and do not stint the first fruits of your hand. With every good gift show a cheerful face, and dedicate your tithe with gladness. Give to the most high as He has given, and as generously as your hand has found. For the Lord is the one who repays, and He will repay you sevenfold.

A PRAYER FOR THE WEEK – Family Prayer

Stay with us Lord, when our family is united, when joy and laughter make life easy.

Stay with us Lord, when there is trouble at home, when discord and anger upset our peace.

Stay with us Lord, when there is sickness at home, when we need your courage and support.

Stay with us Lord, when the journey of life is over, and take us to our heavenly home, to stay with you Lord, in peace forever.

Amen.

ST. MARTIN DE PORRES AND THE MULTIPLICATION OF LOAVES

Nothing whatsoever was excluded from this love. The first, place, of course, was held by the men and women around him, those of his Community and those with whom he came into contact in the streets of Lima. As is the case with every city, there were many poor and destitute people in Lima, and Brother Martin was ready to look after them all. The cost of so much charity did not worry him, for as the poor depended on him, so he leaned on the arm of God. Each day at the Priory he fed an uncounted number of poor people, but no matter how many or how few presented themselves for help, they were provided for from a basket he carried on his arm. The basket was never refilled, but  no matter how much food he took from it, there was always sufficient for the next person. Now Brother Martin was as shrewd a judge of people as anybody else, and often people came looking for charity, who either did not need it or who were too lazy to work. Yet the Laybrother never showed impatience, never said a cross word, but gave as cheerfully and as freely as if they were absolutely destitute and as deserving as a starving child.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

We remember in prayer this weekend the children from Adamstown National School and their families on the occasion of their First Holy Communion which will take place on Saturday 4th May in St. Abban’s Church.

WORDS OF WISDOM

If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow. (Chinese Proverb)
