LOUGH DERG – YOU STAND ON HOLY GROUND
(John Harris, O.P. Irish Catholic)
All that being said, it is wonderful to put one’s shoes back on and get on the boat home. A few days without shoes, sleep and food does make one more grateful for the ordinary delights of life, like shoes, milk in you tea, butter on your toast, but it also leaves you with a renewed awareness of how blessed we are to be believers, to have faith, to experience the awesome love of God and the real community of fellow worshippers. You realise you are not alone on the journey of faith and that we live our faith in the midst of many good and holy people.
CONTRADICTIONS!
Husband: In the 28 years we have been married, you have contradicted everything I said.
Wife: 29 years!!!
THE HEART OF THE HOME (Editor St. Martin Magazine)
A few years ago, I was giving a Parish Mission in the west of Ireland and during the visit to the housebound in the Parish, we entered a typical Irish cottage on a boreen. The last surviving family member had died a few years previously and the house lay abandoned.
The parish priest wanted to show me something which he felt was worthy of a sermon. The house was damp and cold; time stood still; shoes at the door, an apron hanging, and spiders had taken advantage of the freedom to spread their lace hangings back and forth from ceiling to chair. On the wall hung black and white family wedding photos, a picture of John F. Kennedy, and in the midst of the peeling floral wallpaper, the Sacred Heart. The little glowing crucifix in the bulb before the sacred image was still flickering. The family had gone, but the light lived on. I could not but think of the many years that picture of Christ’s love had consoled the occupants. The evening Rosary, the prayers in time of childbirth, sickness and need and the priest who came to administer the last rites.
St. Paul reminded the Romans that “Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” The Heart of Jesus in a home is a reminder that God loves us with a human heart in all situations and that he “stands in our way, he haunts us with a love that runs after us, pulls us out of the pit, casts aside our chains, and places us in the freedom of divine and now even human love”
(Hans Urs von Balthasar )
IRISH PROVERB
Ar scratch a chéile a mhaireann na daoine
People live under each other’s protection.
English – No man is an island.
A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Do not keep anything for a special occasion,
because every day that you live IS a special occasion.
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK – A Prayer for Our World
Lord, in this time of tribulation, hear the prayer we offer
For our suffering world.
May we be united in hope, for the future destiny of our world.
That together we can strive to make it a better place,
Where our human family can live in harmony and peace.
Inspire our political leaders to find just solutions,
To the terrors that beset us.
Shine in our darkness, like a candle.
So that in spite of all the uncertainties in our world today
We may hold fast to our trust in you. Amen.
