Wonderful performances.

Adamstown Athletic Club are deeply saddened to hear of the sad passing of Pat O’Leary. Pat lived and loved athletics, his workload and plans were often changed in a flash to start a race. On race day in Adamstown, the first Church bell chime in the village , Pat’s whistle would sound and away the first race would go and that was the order of the day, race after race. – A raised your flag at the finish line and Pat had the next race under starter’s orders. We will miss Pat here in Adamstown AC,  his worldly advice over the cuppa tea & a bun, starting off with “what are ye at up here at all”

We would like to extend our sympathy to Pat’s wife Margaret, his children Seamus, Mary, Anne, Eamon and Patrick.

A POEM ABOUT WHEN THE UK WAS

“FULL FOR US”

I wrote this little poem based on the stories I heard my Dad tell about the time when he worked in England in the mid 1940’s

The signs on the Birmingham boarding house

Back in the days long gone by

Hung in the window and bluntly said

‘No Irish  need apply’

My father moved from door to door

Frightened, lost and alone

Walking the streets in the bitter cold

Wishing he’d stayed back home.

Work was scarce in Ireland then

And a family had to be fed

My father found work in Birmingham

But ‘twas harder to find a bed.

As he trudged the streets on that winter’s night,

The full moon high in the sky

At every house and on every door

‘No Irish need apply’

It was fast approaching midnight

When a friendly face he found

A sign on the door said ‘Welcome in’

It felt like holy ground.

The landlady said sure you’re welcome here

And I’ll tell you the reason why

My father once met those same cruel signs

‘No Irish need apply’

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Mystical and the inexplicable

This extraordinary series of events began at Mass in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina in the summer of 1996. During the distribution of Communion, a host fell on a dirty floor. The priest decided to put the host in a glass of water to dissolve.

He placed the glass in the tabernacle. Five days later the host had not dissolved but instead there were red blood stains in the glass. The priest contacted his local bishop (now Pope Francis). The bishop contacted a specialist doctor, Caston Gomez to investigate. The doctor sent samples from the glass of water to a laboratory in California for further testing but did not disclose the origin of the sample. The scientists in California presented the following findings: “The tissue was muscle tissue from the left ventricle of a human heart”.

Dr. Gomez further consulted an expert cardiologist in New York, Dr. Frederick Zugibe. Again, he was not told that tissue he was examining was from a sacred host. His conclusion was “The person with this heart must have been very wounded. Under examination this tissue shows the heart would have been under great strain and stress. They were subjected to prolonged torture…. but how is it that as  I was studying the sample it was moving? How did you remove the heart of a dead man and bring it alive to me here in New York?   Dr. Gomez relates the utter shock of his colleague in New York when he was told the  origin of the tissue he was examining.

I find it fitting and very consoling that the Eucharist would appear under the guise of the human heart, that part of all of us where love grows and is given from.

ADAMSTOWN NATIONAL SCHOOL 75th ANNIVERSARY

On Thursday 13th June Adamstown National School celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the School in April 1949. The weather unfortunately didn’t favour the occasion, non the less following Mass the children all marched down the street of Adamstown as the first children did on that April day in 1949. On reaching the school all present were treated to a lovely sing along with songs from the 40’s era. This was followed by a beautiful exhibition of school photos – old and new, and the Roll Books were on display, which were a ‘big hit’ as people took pictures of their parents & grandparents details in the Roll books.

Later on visits to the various classrooms were facilitated, and tea/coffee and refreshments were on offer. A big thanks to Principal Mrs. Claire Kickham, the staff and children who put in such an effort to celebrate this wonderful occasion.

A lovely memory for everyone who attended on the day.

Wishing every success to  Adamstown N. S. and staff going forward.
