LIAM (Stormer) BOOTH

In Adamstown, where tall tales are spun,

There lived a man who was good fun.

Liam (Stormer) Booth his name

He played the beautiful game.

From the hall, down to the pitch

With intensity and great spirits rich.

He played the game with a fearless cheer,

His love for Adamstown was clear.

Where fields full of berries grow,

And corn in the meadows, blows to and fro,

His love for horses and the ball,

Liam’s passion strong in every call.

On the soccer field, he’d  make his stand,

His year was 82 so grand.

Stormer and the boys played strong,

An epic victory, and songs were sung.

They won the league, they brought it home,

Without our Liam, the story might  never unfold.

For Adamstown, where he was born,

A lasting legacy, his story told.

DAY FOR LIFE – Sunday 16th June 2024

‘Day for Life’: a dedicated day celebrating the beauty and dignity of all human life

Day for Life Sunday is celebrated annually with a special message by the Catholic Church across Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.  It is a day specifically dedicated to raising awareness and reflecting on the deep value and meaning of human life at every stage, and in every condition.  On Sunday 16 June, the Church will mark Day for Life 2024 with a message on the theme: The Lord is my shepherd – Compassion and Hope at the End of Life

Reflection:.

‘FIRST THEY CAME’ – (Pastor Martin Niemoller 1892-1984)

First they came for the unborn child

And I did not speak out because I was not an unborn child.

Then they came for the elderly and hopelessly ill

And I did not speak out because I was young and healthy

They they came for the refugee and the homeless

And I did not speak out because I had a country and a home

Then they came for God

And I did not speak out because I had forgotten Him

They they came for me

And there was no one left to speak out for me.

THE STATUE THAT PROMISES GOOD WEATHER

In changing times, even when many marriages are celebrated in hotels and not churches, putting a statue of the Child of Prague outside on the windowsill the night before offers the possibility of having a fine day for the occasion. Customs vary from place to place. In some places the statue is placed, not on the windowsill, but on the ground. In some places it is believed that a headless statue or at least a broken off head or broken and glued back is more efficacious. Custom decides the location, that the statue is placed in the garden under a bush or even buried up to the neck.  But it may also have to be facing towards the house or away from the house, and in some places the statue may be brought indoors and put in the bride’s home. The statue of the child or infant Jesus modelled on the 16th century statue in the Carmelite church of Our Lady of Victories on Malá Strana in Prague in the Czech Republic but its origins are Spanish. A vision of a 13th century Spanish monk may be the simple beginnings of a devotion to the infant Jesus. The small statue of the infant, dressed in aristocratic fashion, with the orb or globe of authority, replacing an earlier bird, would come to the Czech city when in 1556 Maria de Lara  y Mendoza married the Czech nobleman Vratislav of Pernstyn and in 1587 was given as a wedding present to her daughter Princess Polyxenia von Lobkowicz, who gave it to the Carmelites in 1628. Despite conflict and war, the Carmelites have presented the wax coated wooden statue for veneration of the child Jesus. Now with a crown and in a special chapel, the statue is dressed in a variety of vestments and colours.
