COMMUNITY GAMES
2022 saw the return of Community Games to our area with the three parishes of Newbawn, Raheen & Adamstown amalgamating. Over 100 children registered to compete in the following events: U13 Boys & Girls Rounders, U10 mixed Football, U11 Hurling, U14 Camogie, Art & Handwriting, Athletics and Swimming.
Rounders:
Our U13 Girls Rounders were unlucky to lose out to a strong Glynn/Barntown team in the semi-final. U13 Boys Rounders were crowned County Champions against Taghmon and will now move on to represent Wexford in Leinster. Well done to their managers: Dylan Whitty, Ivor Whitty, Mark Curtis, Cáit Foran and Joanne Murphy for getting both teams up and running and re-igniting the interest in rounders in our area.
GAA:
All three of our GAA teams reached the Co. Finals but unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day going down to a very strong combined area of Bree/Davidstown & Cloughbawn teams in the U10 & U11 games and Tintern in the camogie.
A big thank you to all our GAA coaches: Andrew English, Ollie Furlong, Kevin Browne, T.J. Breen, Michael Doran, Nick Whelan, Patrick Fortune, Aine Shannon & Stephen Costello for your time and effort.
Art & Handwriting:
We had great representation in the Art & Handwriting section with 20 children taking part in the Co. finals. Special thank you to Newbawn N.S. Mairead Whelan and Carol Furlong.
Athletics:
40 athletes ventured to the Sports Hub in Enniscorthy on Saturday last to participate in the Co. Finals. We took home an amazing 12 medals. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part, everybody put in brilliant performances.
Special mention to our medallists: Holly Byrne 2nd U8 60m; Bobby O’Shea 4th U12 200m; Daragh Colfer 2nd U10 100m; Joe Breen 3rd U10 100m; Grace White 2nd U10 100m; who will represent Wexford at the All Ireland’s on 13th August and finally our U10 Mixed Relay team of Mossie Brown, Lily Shannon, Joe Breen, Ailleacht O’Keefe, Draragh Colfer and Grace White who just narrowly missed out on a place in the All Irelands finishing second.
Thank you to all the mammies and daddies who braved the weather conditions and to Marie Mooney for organising the local finals and preparing the kids for Saturday.
Swimming:
We have five swimmers taking part in County competition on 1st July – Ava Kelly, Lauren & Seán Moran, Lily Shannon and Sinead Duffy. Wishing you all the best of luck.
Thank you to Adamstown GAA club and Newbawn, Raheen and Adamstown National Schools for helping us by sending out messages regarding training and matches. Final thanks must go to our Community Games committee of Aine Shannon (Sec), Geraldine Thorpe (Treasurer), and Yvonne English (Child Protection Officer). A massive amount of work goes on behind the scenes to pull these events together, thank you ladies for all your hard work and support.

ADAMSTOWN AFC
Last Sunday’s fantastic win for our Ladies team in the Michelle Coleman Cup final against Ross Town ending with a 3-3 draw, having to go on to a penalty shootout, eventually winning 4-2, this capped off a great season for the ladies section of Adamstown AFC. Along with the cup win on Sunday, our U-16 girls won their league and our U-18 girls won the League and Cup double. The U-16 and U-18 titles show the talent that is coming through at the club.
A fantastic achievement this season for all the players involved. A special mention to their coaches and managers
also. Michael (U-16 & U-18); Seán, Eamonn, Leann and Therese. Well done everyone.

NEW CHURCH OF IRELAND BISHOP
Bishop Ger Nash sends congratulation to new Church of Ireland Bishop:
“I wish to warmly welcome Bishop Adrian Wilkinson as the new Church of Ireland Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory.
I spoke to Bishop Adrian following his election and I offered my congratulations to him on his new appointment as Bishop, and also extended my good wishes to his wife Jackie.
Bishop Adrian has an established connection with his new diocese as his late father, Ken, previously ministered as Rector in Enniscorthy. I assured Bishop Adrian and Jackie of my prayerful support and wish them God’s blessings as they undertake their new diocesan responsibilities. I look forward to working closely with them in the future”
A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
If you died tonight, your employer would have a job advertised to fill your role by the end of the month.
But your family and friends will miss you forever.
Don’t get so busy on making a living that you forget to work at making a life.

ADAMSTOWN SHOW – Looking Back
Following a meeting in the Vocational School on 7th October 1946, and the setting up of a Young Framer’s Club, it was decided to hold an Agricultural and Horticultural show the following year. The Club immediately set about raising funds, a dance was organised for the Patron Night 27th October at Knockreigh. The dance was a huge success. Dave Moyinhan’s band with loud speakers supplied the music, admission was three shillings and six pence with supper extra. A heavy snowfall in February 1947 left the country snow white until March. July 24th was the date fixed for the first show, the venue was John Cullen’s Church meadow and the Vocational School. Paddy Moore recalls going to a wood in Carrigbyrne to cut poles for the jumps. Early morning rain caused concern for the committee, but sky’s cleared allowing the show to go ahead as planned.
It was the main conversation for weeks the success of this new venture, the show dance was held at the Barrack’s, Martin O’Brien having responsibility for the lighting, he toured the countryside on his bicycle collecting tilley lamps.
The First Show: Patrons: Rev M. Wallace, Rev T. Yeats, T.W. Jefferies, J Cullen. Chairman – Jim Redmond. Vice-Chair – Jas Power. Committee: Denis O’Brien, Jim Kelly, Martin Furlong, Frank Barry. A report in the Echo newspaper stated:
An Agricultural Show and horse jumping competition held on Thursday week at Adamstown under the auspices of the Young Farmers’ Club was attended by all-round success, and the promoters are to be congratulated on the success of their first venture. Competitions for horse showing and jumping, horticulture, poultry and dairy produce, cookery, needlework and jam were included in the programme and the support forthcoming from all sections exceeded the highest expectations. Adamstown parish is noted for horse breeding and this fact was reflected on the remarkably large entry. In the five horse classes seventy-six horses of outstanding quality were shown, the brood mares making a very strong class. The horse jumping attracted a total of 103 competitors, which must be something of a record for a provincial show. The total entry for the Show was close to five hundred entries and the competitors were drawn from all over Co. Wexford. The excellent arrangements won favourable comment and it was quite evident that this fixture has come to stay. The Show Dance was held at The Barracks and attracted a large attendance, music was provided by David Moyinhan’s band.
