ADAMSTOWN TIDY TOWNS

Adamstown Tidy Towns would like to thank Wexford County Council for funds received through the Community Activities Fund 2021. Adamstown now has its own Outdoor Free Little Library positioned in the Community Garden. The concept of the library is to promote reading for all ages, bring a book / share a book. There are also games, which interact with the bug signs, which are positioned on the surrounding fence. The two original benches, which were positioned on the green area, have been restored, one has been positioned adjacent to the library and the second will be installed in a suitable place shortly. We would like to thank Mick Delahunty and Pat who did a great job of sandblasting the bench frames free gratis. Thanks also to John, Robert and Mark Furlong for their help with the galvanising, varnishing and installing the new teak boards. Pawel and Ian who installed the Library and Bench and Paddy O’Shea for sourcing the Teak boards. We are very fortunate to have so many people willing to give their time for free, however, we need more help with the general cleaning up of the village.

Please contact 087 7631442 if you have spare time it would be wonderful to see people avail of this space during the summer months ahead. Bring a book to swap or spend some quality time reading to your children or they can plant some seeds at the children’s planting table to nurture at home. Free horticultural classes are held on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday mornings, all ages welcome.

We have entered Tidy Towns again this year, so fingers crossed we will receive a positive response.

A BIT OF HISTORY – ‘Operation Shamrock’

One of my closest friends is a German, Helmut Sundermann. It was he who introduced me to a story that I had never heard of. Since the controversy about Brexit began this story has often returned to me as a metaphor for the importance of building bridges, not walls.

On March 23rd, 1997 the German President, Dr. Roman Herzog, visited Ireland as a thank you to the country for giving safety and shelter to German refugees after the Second World War. Until recently, ‘Operation Shamrock’ was a forgotten chapter of Irish and European History. In 1945 over 300 people attended the founding meeting of Save the German Children Society in the Shelburne Hotel. On 27th July, 1946 eighty-eight German children emerged from a passenger ferry and tentatively set foot on Dun Laoghaire pier. Waiting for them were a host of Red Cross workers with parcels of food, keeping up a stream of conversation, chattering excitedly and laughing. They were accompanied by groups of nervous families who were seeking out the girl and boy who would eventually become their temporary child for the next three years. The German children stared in awe at the treasure trove of cakes and fresh fruit as the organisers began the introductions. For some, the memory of the horrors of war could never be erased. Protestant and Catholic relief agencies in Germany selected children between the ages of five and fifteen who were brought here in 1946 and 1947 first to Glencree and later to their temporary homes. Five hundred Christian children were fostered in this way. In the heart of Ireland some would learn first hand the bitter truth of Chekov’s observations: “For the lonely man the desert is everywhere”

Some of them would go on to become more Irish than the Irish. Initially the plan was that these children would remain in Ireland for three years, but such intense bonds were formed that the final departure of refugees led to heart-breaking scenes at Dun Laoghaire and the Government decided that the children could stay as long as both the Irish foster parents and their German parents agreed. Those who remained here got married and raised Irish families of their own. Fifty children who came from Germany in 1946 and stayed in Ireland were reunited with those who returned home to Germany during President Herzog’s visit in 1997, in all 160 of the original 500 foster children and 180 foster families attended. They watched the German president place a commerative plaque and lead a delegation to Glencree, where it all began.

Operation Shamrock is one of the earliest examples of the close ties that began to form between Europe and Ireland after the war, and is an example of the Irish people at their best.  (John Scally – Beautiful Thoughts For Beautiful Minds)

Who would have though that today in 2022, we would see the same thing happening as Ireland opens its door to refugees from Ukraine as they escape a savage war in their own country.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK  (Sacred Heart Novena 2022)

Lord Jesus, you sought out quiet places where you could be alone with your Father.

In this busy world, I often find it difficult to find time to share with God my intimate thoughts and feelings.

Help me to seek an opportunity each day to spend even a short time with you in the Father’s presence. Amen.
