SUMMER SOLSTICE 21st – 23rd June

(Celebrating Irish Festivals – Ruth Marshall)

Summer solstice, 21st June, is the longest day of the year.

The sun appears to stand still (solstice means ‘sun stand’), rising at the same point for three days in a row. The sun is at its zenith at this time, but from now onwards the wheel of the year slowly turns towards the dark again.

My mind wandered to a lovely version I once heard of

‘The Homes of Donegal’. It’s a beautiful song and so many sing it and sing it so well. No many include these lines though, and I think they’re powerful:

I’d love to sit and talk with you

and while away the night;

the picture on the wall up there,

our Saviour with a light.

The hope of wandering sheep like me

the Lord of rise and fall,

there’s a touch of Heavenly Love

around the homes of Donegal.

OUR LADY’S ISLAND PILGRIMAGE

After two years of Covid restrictions it is with pleasure that we resume our usual pilgrimage season in Our Lady’s Island. The opening ceremony with Mass and Procession will be at 3pm on Monday 15th August and concludes on Thursday 8th September with Candlelight Procession.

Each weekday we have Mass at 3pm & 8pm with several speakers and musicians invited to take part.

It is customary for many parishes and organizations to come for their own special pilgrimage, be that afternoon or evening. To do so provides a wonderful opportunity for people to bond and reclaim a sense of being community, especially after the isolation and declining Church practice of the past few years. The feed back from such gatherings has always been positive and that it provided a welcome injection of faith and new life.

We warmly welcome such gatherings to resume again this year and in order to co-ordinate events, we would invite you to request an application form from Ann Carthy, Our Lady’s Island, and return it before the end of June. Her number is 087 6464198. (Fr. Jim Cogley P.P. Director of Pilgrimage)
