A THOUGHT FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN AWAITING EXAM RESULTS

Now that the Junior & Leaving Cert exam results will be coming out soon, please remember, amongst the students who sat their exams there is an artist, who doesn’t need to understand maths. There is an entrepreneur, who doesn’t care about History or English literature. There is a musician, who’s chemistry marks won’t matter. There’s an athlete, who’s physical fitness is more important than physics. If your child does get top marks, that’s great! But if he or she doesn’t, please don’t take away their self-confidence and dignity from them. Tell them it’s ok; it’s just an exam!

They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter what they score, you love them and will not judge them. Please do this, and when you do, watch your children conquer the world. One exam or low mark won’t take away, their dreams and talent. And please do not think that doctors and engineers are the only happy people in the world.

ADAMSTOWN ICA NEWS

The Adamstown ICA ladies have been very busy over the last number of weeks. First we had the Special Occasions held in Bree on Wednesday June 22nd, the theme was The Emigrant. The Adamstown ladies didn’t win any prizes but got very credible marks for their presentation. We enjoyed a lovely supper provided by Bree Guild and were entertained afterwards by members of various ICA guilds, including our own Callie and Helen and also some invited guests.

On Saturday June 25th a large contingent of ladies travelled on the Co. Federation ICA bus to Riverdance The Musical in The Gaiety Theatre. Dublin. It was a wonderful show and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We stopped off in Avoca for lunch and some shopping and on the return journey we had a lovely dinner in The Arklow Bay Hotel.

Next we had the Federation Meeting in Camross Hall on Monday June 27th attended by eleven of our members.

We had several entries for the Aldi National Brown Bread Competition and the Federation Competition for the best Rose. We were delighted to get First Prize the best Rose entered by Sheelagh, which earns the Guild three points.

It was all hands on deck for the Adamstown Show on Saturday 2nd July where we had our own ICA tent. Everyone who was free turned up to help and there was no shortage of crafts for the display. Visitors from England and Scotland stopped by and two lovely young lads dropped in to admire our craftwork and pose for a photo with members.

PRO-LIFE RALLY IN DUBLIN

A number of people from the area went to the recent Pro-Life Rally in Dublin. It was very well attended with people stretching the whole length of O’Connell Street. There were a number of excellent speakers who stressed that the right to life is not a gift some of us bestow on others but a HUMAN right. There have been almost 21,000 abortions since the Referendum in 2018. One poster read:

‘The media changed perception, the people changed the constitution, politicians changed the law, but on one can change the TRUTH’. Is it time to rethink abortion as they have done in the USA by overturning Roe v Wade?

GOING TO MASS IS GOOD FOR YOU

(Helen Bruce – Irish Daily Mail, July 14th

Going to Mass and believing in God is good for your health, scientists have found. An analysis of 370 separate studies, published in the American Medical Association, confirms that identifying as religious or spiritual is associated with better physical and mental health. It also found that community worship and congregations were important factors, not just a person’s individual faith. However, the number of priests in Ireland is continuing to decline, leading Limerick’s Bishop Brendan Leahy to warn that he could no longer be certain that there would be a priest in every church on a Sunday.

He said,  “We can no longer guarantee the celebration of a Mass in each church in the diocese each Sunday”

The Archdiocese of Dublin is inviting lay people to train to lead prayers at the cemetery and crematorium, due to the growing shortage of prises available to carry out funeral work.

FIRST WEXFORD MAN TO BECOME HEAD OF GAA

(Dan Walsh – Echo Newspaper 21st January 2004)

In the history of the GAA only two Wexfordmen have held the most prestigious office in the Association, that of President – the first being Patrick D. Breen from Carrig on Bannow.

Patrick was born on February 7th 1883. After primary education at Danescastle N.S. he studied at St. Peter’s College from 1895-1900. He then moved to the National Teacher Training College in Dublin. He always had an interest in hurling and football and as a teenager he was an outstanding footballer. While in Dublin he joined Bray Emmet’s and was a member of the team to win the All-Ireland Championship in 1904. In fact, he was the youngest player to win an All-Ireland medal at the time. Having qualified as a National School teacher he was appointed to Castlebridge in 1904 and almost immediately became secretary of the local GAA club, a position he held for many years. His reputation grew quickly and within a short time he became manager of the Wexford senior hurling and football teams. He steered the footballers through a record-breaking period between 1913-1918. He represented Wexford in senior hurling and football from 1904-1914, except in 1910, when Wexford won its first All-Ireland hurling title. He played with three Leinster football shield teams in 1905, 06 & 07, but an injury to his knee lost him the opportunity of finding his place on the All-Ireland winning football teams from 1914 – 1918. Patrick represented Leinster on the Central Council from 1913 – 1922 and was elected Wexford’s first President of the G.A.A. in 1924, he was returned in 1925 and was the first All-Ireland medallist to hold the office.

He died on April 4th 1965 and his final resting place is St. Ibar’s Cemetery, Castlebridge. May he rest in peace.

A HURLER’S PRAYER  (Seamus Redmond)

Grant me O Lord, a hurler’s skill,

With strength of arm and speed of limb

Unerring eye for the flying ball,

And courage to match whate’er befall

May my stroke be steady and my aim be true,

My actions manly and my misses few,

No matter what way the game may go,

May I rest in friendship with every foe,

When the final whistle for me has blown,

And I stand at last before God’s judgement throne.

May the great referee when he calls my name,

Say, you hurled like a man, you played the game.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK (Aid to the Church in Need)

When lighting a candle.

Lord, may this candle be a light for you to enlighten me in my difficulties and decisions.

May it be a fire for you to burn out of me all pride, selfishness and impurity.

May it be a flame for you to bring warmth to my heart towards my family, my neighbours and all those who meet me.

In leaving this candle I wish to give you myself.

May I continue my prayer in everything I do this day. Amen.
