SHAMROCK VINTAGE CLUB

Pat Byrne Memorial Road Run:

The Shamrock Vintage Club’s Pat Byrne Memorial Road Run, which took place on Sunday last in beautiful weather condition, was a huge success. The proceeds from the run they kindly donated to Adamstown Cemetery Committee for the continued upkeep of the cemetery.

We thank the Shamrock Club for their help and co-operation working jointly with the Cemetery Committee in ensuring the day was run in an efficient and safe way for all involved.

A sincere thanks to all those who so generously donated to the run whether taking part or giving their support. The final amount raised was €5,520 – a huge amount of money, which will help enormously towards the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. Many thanks to the ladies who helped from early Sunday morning to provide tea & scones/currant bread to the drivers before they departed & following their return they appreciated the lovely soup, sandwiches, teas & confectionery served up. It was so heartening to see the amount of food that was given voluntary by so many parishioners and many outside the Parish for the Run, which made the whole day a lovely community effort and which we have missed so much over the past couple of years.

Thanks also for the 22 Raffle prizes on offer, which were donated and gratefully received by the Cemetery Committee, congratulations to all the winners.

Finally, thanks to the Community Centre Committee for the use of the Centre, which is such a very important facility in our community and we are so grateful to have it on hand.

THE KINGDOM BREAKING THROUGH

The Kingdom of God breaks into our lives very often in quiet, apparently insignificant ways. More than fifty years ago, shortly after I was ordained, I was stopped by an elderly woman in a poor part of Dublin, just around the corner from where I had gone to school. She wasn’t well dressed but she didn’t ask me for anything. She simply wanted to tell me how lonely she was. She kept repeating that. I never met that woman again, but I have never forgotten her. I often pray for her soul and also pray that one day she will welcome me into the heavenly home that God wills for all of us.

That encounter at a street corner in Dublin has been an on-going grace for me, an experience of the Kingdom of God breaking through in what would seem to have been a totally insignificant event. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”, Jesus tells us at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Being ‘poor in spirit’ means knowing one’s need of God. The woman who stopped me in the street was expressing that because she saw that I was a priest and, in some way, a representative of the Lord. The only thing I could give that poor woman, who was old enough to be my grandmother, was a listening ear. But she gave me a glimpse into the Kingdom of God – a gift that has lasted all these years. “My Kingdom is not from this world”, Jesus declared as He stood before Pilate. But His Kingdom is constantly breaking through in this world, in very ordinary, unplanned encounters when God gives us the grace to see and to hear – and we accept that grace.

REFLECTION – The Footprints of Allah

A French scientist was travelling in the desert and sat outside his tent in the cool of sunset, talking with his young Bedouin guide about religion. ‘Nobody knows’, said the Frenchman, ‘nobody can know for certain that there is a God’ The lad pointed to a smooth stretch of sand across which went a track of footprints. ‘When I see those footprints in the sand’, he said, ‘I know for certain that some man has passed this way. Only a man could have made them.

He pointed to the fading colours of a glorious sunset in the west, and then overhead to the dark blue sky in which the great stars were coming out one by one. ‘And when I see the sun, and the moon, and the starry heavens in their beauty, I know for certain that the Creator has passed this way. They are the footprints of Allah’. The Bedouin was right. From the works of God which are seen we can know, even without revelation, that God exists.  ‘The heavens tell forth the glory of God’

SHEEP AND LAMBS  By – Katharine Tynan Hinkson

All in the April evening,

April airs were abroad;

The sheep with their little lambs

Pass’d me by on the road.

The lambs were weary, and crying

With a weak human cry,

I thought on the Lamb of God

Going meekly to die.

Up in the blue, blue mountains

Dewy pastures are sweet;

Rest for the little bodies,

Rest for the little feet.

But for the Lamb of God,

Up on the hill-top green,

Only a cross of shame

Two stark crosses between.

Note: Catherine Tynan, was born at Whitehall dairy farm, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, on 23rd January 1859 one of twelve children. Her father was a cattle farmer.

She had regular chats with W.B. Yeats, and she wrote 100 novels, 12 collections of short stories, three plays, and anthologies.
