Eulogy Read at Jimmy O’Shea’s funeral Mass by his

Son Brendan on Monday 3rd April 2023

We would like as a family to pay tribute to our father Jimmy O’Shea.  Jimmy was born in 1944 at the Barracks, to Jim and Ellen O’Shea. He was reared and lived his whole life in the village. He was a Peace Commissioner and carried out this role with dedication and responsibility. He worked with the late Sean O’Gorman in the building industry and in St. Abban’s Hall and later in Adamstown Community Centre. He was a life-long member of Adamstown Athletic Club. He was a member of Adamstown Branch of the Labour Party. Daddy helped his neighbours and friends by digging graves for their deceased loved ones. He loved Adamstown, his neighbours, its community and people.  He was a hard worker, he took pride in his work and did it properly, growing strawberries, rearing sheep and reading History books and was a great story teller. Daddy was held with great affection by his family, friends and neighbours. He lived life to the full and all who knew him knew how much he enjoyed social and family get togethers. Our Father was very proud to be an O’Shea. He married Betty Doran in 1969 and they had nine children; Seamus, Eleanor, Eamonn, Brendan, Padraig, John, Stephen, Brian and Alan. He was very proud of his children and he never tried to make us into anything other than ourselves. He instilled in us the need to be hard-working and to be reliable not through words but by modelling hard work itself. He loved all his family unconditionally. We would also like to pay tribute to our loving mother for the incredible care and kindness she gave to daddy over the past year of his illness. She looked after his every need. Daddy faced the last few months of his illness with dignity and enormous strength and courage, and in the end fought the good fight. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, brother, uncle, builder, painter, fisherman, farmer, doorman, scholar and a true Gentleman. On behalf of the family we would like to thank all those who attended the wake on April 1st & 2nd in the little Chapel in St. Abban’s Church and to those that attended the funeral Mass on April 3rd and the burial in the adjoining cemetery. We would also like to thank all the lovely messages of condolences on RIP.ie and card and mass cards that we received. This was a huge support and source of comfort for the family. Thanks to Fr. Robert Nolan for the beautiful funeral Mass and to Cáit for all the help in organising it. To Fr. Tom, Fr. David and in particularly Fr. Odhrán who was so kind to daddy in hospital. A heartfelt thanks from the family to the gravediggers and also to Ryan’s funeral home for their very sensitive handling of the funeral arrangements. Thanks to all who helped with the beautiful music for the funeral Mass and to T.J. McDonald for the live streaming of the Mass and to the Community Centre for the use of the premises after the funeral. Thanks to all our neighbours and friends who were a huge support to the family at this time. Thanks to Gerry and his staff in Adamstown Pharmacy and Dr. Catherine and staff at Adamstown Health Centre. We would also like to offer a special word of thanks to Wexford Hospital for the care and kindness they gave daddy, in particular Professor Buckley and his team and the wonderful Palliative Care Team.

We will miss our Dad so much. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
