OLDER LONELINESS – (Messenger Magazine)

Well-known author Fr. Ronald Rolheiser says, ‘as you get older, a new kind of loneliness begins to break through inside’.  It’s the realisation of your own mortality, the realisation that there will always be some areas of life where you will be all alone. It often leads to bitterness of soul. It is helpful to understand this, precisely so as not to become bitter. Where do you feel this kind of loneliness?

You feel it in those silent areas that exist between you and your spouse, your families, your friends and your community. There are always things that can’t be spoken, can’t be understood, can’t be harmonised, even in your most intimate relationships and especially inside of family and community life. At those moments you can feel like a minority-of-one, unanimity-minus-one, alone morally with most of what’s deepest in you. But, like the loneliness of youth, this ‘older loneliness’ has much to teach us. This is

the loneliness you feel when you drive away from the family gathering, finish that long talk with your spouse, stand trying to explain something to your own child, or are left muttering to yourself after that church or civic meeting. What do you do?. During Covid-19 people who could not go out found the phone, the text message kept them in touch and kept some of the loneliness at bay. Online worship helped also, though it highlighted that we couldn’t meet. As Covid-19 becomes more manageable, we can learn how to deal with loneliness. Apart from the phone, reading is helpful (especially when we can find where we left our glasses). A certain amount of reminiscence is good. We can welcome people who would like to visit. Daily Mass is a true ‘godsend’ for both prayer and community. We can pray by reading a psalm or a favourite scripture passage every day, saying the rosary or simply being still. We may notice that people we used to visit or who used to visit us tail off; with people no longer able to drive or finding they have less energy. We can try not to give

in to loneliness and can convert it to solitude, where a satisfaction may be found in remembering life with gratitude and prayer.

TRÓCAIRE BOX

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – (Jewish Proverb)

A bird that you set free may be caught again, but a word that escapes your lips will not return.

THE WONDERFUL WREN

Wrens are tiny birds with huge personalities. We see them in our gardens and in the countryside and they are easily recognised by their upward perky tails and jaunty flight.

Considering they are so tiny, weighing only 10 grams, they have a powerful song, which is full of, a complex chirps, chirrs, trills and whistles.  The male wren is often seen on a fence post or shrub singing his tiny heart out in the hope of finding the perfect lady wren. When he has found her, he brings her to see the 6-12 beautiful domed shaped nests, which he has constructed. Only one nest is chosen by the female and in she lays her 5-6 glossy white eggs with pinkish speckles. However, with each male constructing several nests, suitable nest sites are at a premium. Because of this, wrens often pick unusual nesting spots and have been known to build in places as bizarre as the pocket of an old coat, a tilly hat and a clothes-peg-bag. When the first female is suitably settled, the male takes off and immediately starts to sing again to attract another female to fill one of the surplus empty nests, which he has constructed (no waste here). The female incubates her eggs, which take about a fortnight to hatch. She looks after her tiny chicks, feeding them on insects and spiders and they fledge in about 16-17 days. Two broods can be reared in one season.

This behaviour works well for wrens. Their populations have not dwindled like those of other birds and I am delighted to tell you that they are not an endangered species. That is even more reason to go outside and pay attention to God’s creation. Seeing and hearing what’s around you is the place to begin and I assure you that the wonderful wren will not be far away.
