SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

Work being done outside Adamstown N.S. to make it a safer place for children to access the school

The project was developed in partnership with the NTA and Green Schools. The focus of the front of the school works is on the prioritisation of safe pedestrian access to the school, improving school visibility through signposting and placemaking, and reducing vehicle congestion in the area.

These will be evident in the reduction of road width by widening of the footpaths in the ‘school zone’; raised pedestrian crossing at the school entrance, removal of the street parking at the front of the school and change in surfacing in the ‘school zone’. All parking for drop off and collections will take place in St. Abban’s Hall car park and the pedestrian routes will be used by parents and children to access the school.  The proposed School Zone will provide students a safe space to access school and highlight the presence of children. Adamstown National School is delighted to be the first school in County Wexford to have this extensive project carried out.  Expected start date is Monday 3rd July 2023.

SYMPATHY – VINNY POWER R.I.P.

It was with deep sadness the news came on Saturday evening last of the unexpected death of Vinny Power, The Leap. Vinny was well-known in the Adamstown area much further afield. Vinny was a kind and generous person with his time and a good neighbour and friend. We extend our deepest sympathy to his sisters Catherine, Jean, brothers Sean and David, his partner Ann, extended family, many relatives in the parish, neighbours and friends. His funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Abban’s Church on Thursday last with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

SPORT’S AWARD – Good Counsel College

Congratulations to Laurence Power, who received the trophy for ‘Most Improved Player of the Year’, and who was a towering presence in all the rugby victories throughout the Campaign.

GOOD WISHES ON RETIREMENT

Sending good wishes to Mary Howlett who has retired as secretary of Raheen National School. Mary has in her 22 years there been very obliging and co-operative to the benefit of Adamstown National School in all that time, in particular with rounders, camogie & GAA match arrangements. We wish her the very best and hope she has a long and happy retirement.

PRAYER GROUP’S OUTING

The Prayer Group’s final activity before the Summer break was a trip to Mount Melleary recently. It included a very interesting talk about the history of this wonderful place from Fr. Denis Luke. It was founded in 1832 by 64 monks who were expelled from the Abbey of Melleray in France following a revolution in 1830. The monks say prayers seven times a day, starting at 4.30am. The group attended those at midday. The day concluded with a short visit to Lismore, a drive through the beautiful Vee and a meal in Clonmel.

Thank you to all who came along and those who organised it.

WEXFORD MARTYRS – Feast Day Wed 5th July

The Wexford Martyrs were Matthew Lambert, Robert Meyler,

Edward Cheevers, Patrick Cavanagh, John O’Lahy and another martyr whose name is unknown. In 1581 they were found guilty of high treason for aiding in the escape of James Eustace, 3rd Viscount, Baltinglass, and for conveying a Jesuit and other catholic priests and laymen out of Ireland.

They were hanged, drawn and quartered in Wexford on 5th July 1581. They were beatified in 1992 by Pope John Paul 11

GREAT EXCITEMENT IN ROSBERCON IN 1887

The 18th September 1887 was an occasion of great celebration in Rosbercon on the opening of the new railway station. The railway linked New Ross with Dublin via Chapel and Macmine Junction prior to which the nearest rail link was either Mullinavat or Ballywilliam Stations. At the time there was little celebration in Ross as the big merchants of the town had fought hard and failed to have the station situated on their side of the river. Although the national railway system had reached Waterford and Wexford by the 1860’s, it took a further 28 years to reach New Ross.

In the 1850’s a rail link was proposed to connect Rosbercon with Thomastown via Inistioge and Listerlin, however this never materialised. The new Rosbercon line was an immediate financial success resulting in further plans to extend the line to Waterford, construction which commenced in August 1898. In its construction it employed 200 men and 40 horses and cart units. According to surviving records, the construction costs of Rosbercon Station were £1033,76. and an additional £235.00 for an engine turntable. The Red Bridge over the Barrow cost £21,234.00. The new Waterford link opened to traffic on 15th February 1904 with a station situated at Alywardstown. Another very important railway link for New Ross traders was the opening of the Waterford to Rosslare line in 1906 giving a direct link with the UK. In the 1950’s /60’s Rosbercon Station was a very busy place for almost all town trade and passengers. There was considerable movement of fertiliser, malting grain, roofing felt, cable, leather, beet and livestock all with a relatively small station area. The regular staff resided mostly in the village who worked hard and gave a good service. We can today thankfully look forward to seeing the old station and rail line site converted to a much-appreciated Greenway.

IT HAPPENED IN JULY – 4th July 1776

The birth of American Independence is celebrated on this date, after a five-person committee – Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin and Robert R Livingston – drafted and edited a formal document announcing American’s giant step towards independence from Britain. Thomas Jefferson secured his place in history as the chief composer of the Declaration. Coincidentally, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both died on the same day – remarkably, on 4 July 1826.
