DANNY DOYLE PRESENTATION OF PROCEEDS FROM HIS BOOK TO SR. HELEN DELANEY

On Friday night 16th June in Adamstown Community Centre local man Danny Doyle presented a cheque for €16,500 to Sr. Helen Delaney, for the benefit of the marginalised and under privileged people of Uganda, where Sr. Helen did such life-saving work for forty years. Sr. Helen was deeply appreciative of this huge gesture and said “We just couldn’t imagine what a difference this will make to the needy in Uganda, and thanks so much to everyone for their generosity” It was an amazing amount of money which was donated to Danny by so many people who purchased his book ‘Rise and Fall of the Dance Halls of Ireland’ and the Hundred year Anniversary of the Civil War in the Adamstown area, the book was launched in March last.  The amount of money raised astonished and delighted all present on the night, and as Danny said “Myself and all the family are humbled by the generosity of everyone”. Many people joined with the Doyle family for this gathering and thanks to Danny, Mary and family for the refreshments afterwards and a lovely catch up with people who we don’t meet as often as we did before Covid.  Congratulations Danny on a job well done!

ADAMSTOWN TIDY TOWNS

In 2016 Adamstown Tidy Towns was formed consisting of ten members. A petition was drafted up to complete the street lighting from the crossroads to the Fairfileds estate.

Shortly afterwards it was forwarded with 289 signatures to Wexford Co. Council and within a couple of months, the street lights were up and running. . We then organised for two free C.P.R. training sessions with the Irish Heart Association in the Community Centre, it was very well attended with 48 people who learned the basics of what to do if they were ever faced with that situation. There are many people who don’t know where the Defibrillators are located, even though every time you enter Cullen’s shop, you pass by one. Next we decided that the village needed some colour and we enlisted the Coláiste Abbáin Transisition year students, with their Art teacher Annette Byrne to paint a Mural just outside Adamstown Pharmacy, which depicts some of Adamstown heritage sites. The students also planted miniature daffodils in pots on two occasions and helped raise €620 for the Irish Cancer Society. They like to get out of class for a couple of hours and were duly paid with ice cream afterwards. The Shamrock Men’s Shed also contributed by making up timber flower boxes and thirty bird boxes, which were positioned all around the village. There were so welcoming and willing to help and we thank them for that. There were yearly Clean ups in the village and surrounding areas, this is one which was very well supported with our volunteers. We entered the Tidy Town Competition in 2019 and again in 2022 and it didn’t matter that we were low down the list because were proud of this village. Keep Wexford Beautiful gave us an environmental award in 2020, which was followed with a New Ross Municipal District award in 2022.  Local man Dale Kirwan, applied for a grant on our behalf and a bug hotel, bird boxes, a children’s planting table and educational signs were positioned in Adamstown Community Garden, which is beside Adamstown National School. If anyone is interested in helping out, please contact Raheen Resource Centre for more details. This area also has a Free Little Library and seating area for the children. New benches, bins and bicycle stands were positioned in the village and a Time Capsule buried on the green area. Our favourite project without a doubt has to be the granite village name stone depicting Adamstown in both English & Irish and no doubt the row of Cherry Trees behind, with in time will increase the beauty of the village in the coming years. It’s been a fun five years, but its getting more difficult to find people to give their time, so with that we are finishing up for good. We would like to thank John Fleming and Pat Barden for their help and advise, all the committee members, volunteers and especially Wexford County Council without whom many of our projects would have not been possible.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK – Pope Francis in Laudato Si.’

God of love, show us our place in this world

as channels of your love for all creatures

of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight.

Enlighten those who possess power and money that

they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may

love the common good, advance the weak, and care

for this world in which we live. Praise be you! Amen.

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK  –(Mahatma Gandhi)

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

WORDS OF WISDOM (Chinese Proverb)

A child’s life if like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.

ANNIVERSARIES OF ORDINATON

Our best wishes to all the Priests who recently celebrated their Anniversaries. The following tribute was written by

Fr. Jim Nolan to mark the Silver Jubilee of Fr. Billy Swan, ADM, Wexford. Our congratulations on this milestone in his ministry.

In Your Service

The aroma of Christ

Modulated by the rhythm

Of His call.

Officiant in service

At the table of the Lord

Where the lamp is kindled

To overflowing

Spilling the oil of gladness

O’er his youthful years,

Whilst listening to the sound

Of spring wells

Bursting onto the

Rich harvest of his labouring,

Realising that there is

Another field beyond

Where the menorah candles glow.
