WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL

Is your child starting “big school” in September?

Be sure to bring them along to your local library where they can pick up their own “My Little Library Bag”. This initiative aims to help children prepare for this important milestone.

Each My Little Library Book  Bag contains

A book on starting school, or making friends or being comfortable to be yourself.

Their very own library card and special ‘My Little Library’

Cardholder.

We hope that once they visit the library to pick up their book bag, our new library members and their families will come back regularly to keep their bag filled up with borrowed books and to take part in story-times, classes and all  the other events we have to offer at the library.

WHAT THE IRISH GAVE TO THE CULINARY WORLD

Ireland produces the best food in the world. This includes

Milk, barley, beef, wheat, potatoes, pork, oats, poultry, mushrooms and mutton. It is not surprising that many food and drink products were invented by Irish people.

This is just some of them:

The Bacon Rasher:

The son of a shoemaker, Henry Denny was born in Waterford in 1790. He became a food  merchant. Instead of soaking bacon in brine to preserve it, Henry invented a process called ‘mild curing’ in which only a small quantity of dry salt is used. Instead of cutting it into large chunks, Henry used long flat pieces of bacon. These pieces were cut into what we call rashers of bacon. No full Irish breakfast is complete without a fried rasher or two.

Waterford Blaas:

In Waterford city, in 1702, Huguenots from France had set up a bakery producing bread. Locals began to use leftover pieces of their bread dough to make what they called blaas.

The Waterford blaa is protected legally by the Protected Geographical Indication, i.e. they can be produced only in Waterford City. People eat these beautiful small white floury rolls with butter for breakfast or often fill them with egg, bacon, or sausage to enjoy at any time.

Boxty:

The traditional Irish potato pancake called Boxty, or bacstaí originated in Ireland in the 1700’s. Grated potatoes are covered with mashed potatoes. Then flour, salt, pepper, and butter are added. This dough is shaped into small cakes before they are baked in the oven. Boxty is associated with St. Bridget’s day, February 1st, and many Irish daughters may recall their mothers reciting this little poem:

Boxty on the griddle,

Boxty on the pan,

If you can’t make boxty,

You’ll never get a  man.

Flavoured Potato Crisps:

Until the 1950’s, potato crisps, or chips as they are called in the US, came in one flavour only: plain. Joe Murphy from Thomas Street, Dublin, started his own potato company in O’Rahilly’s Parade, off Moore Street, Dublin in 1954.  Called Tayto, this company produced Cheese and Onion flavour initially, and then Salt and Vinegar. Often nicknamed Spud Murphy, Joe’s firm was extremely successful and today they export potato crisps of many flavours to 37 countries.

POPE FRANCIS SENDS HIS BLESSING TO PARIS OLYMPICS

Pope Francis said: “I ask the Lord to bestow his gifts upon all those who will participate in any way – whether athletes for spectators – and also to support and bless those who will host them, especially the faithful of Paris and elsewhere”

Mass for Peace was celebrated on July 19th in the Madeleine Church in Paris.

STAR ATHLETE AN ‘EVANGELISER’ AND ROLE MODEL FOR YOUTH’

Celebrated runner Ciara Mageean who is set to represent Ireland in the Paris Olympics has been described as a “natural evangeliser” who is not ashamed to speak of her Catholic Faith.  Fr.Fergal McGrady P.P. of Ms.Mageean’s home parish of Portaferry, Co. Down said locally they are “very, very proud of Ciara”.  Speaking of the middle-distance runner’s influence on young people, Fr. McGrady said: ! I do know that she has made a big impact on the young people when she speaks to them – and to everybody. “When she gets home to her family, she has so little time on her hands before she is called back to training but she always, always, gives time to the local schools and the young people, to have a word with them,” he said. “I believe in her own way Ciara is a natural evangeliser and she is not ashamed at all to talk about her Catholic, Christian Faith – she has courage in that way. And besides all of that she is just a lovely person” Adding to an already trophy studded career, Ms. Mageean clinched gold in the 1,500m final in Stadio Olimpico in Rome last month at the European Championships, but it is not her favourite medal according to Fr. McGrady who said: “When she was in one of our primary schools, one of the children asked her, what is your favourite medal?. And she immediately took out the  miraculous  medal from around her neck and said ‘this is my most important and favourite medal
