New members are always welcome!

In the new Diocesan Model, recently established by Bishop Ger Nash, in consultation with the Priests, and people of the Diocese, St. Abban’s church falls into the Pastoral Area of New Ross, Cushinstown and Newbawn, so  musicians and singers from these areas are very welcome too.

ADAMSTOWN COMMUNITY CENTRE – AGM

The Annual General Meeting of Adamstown Community  Centre takes place on Monday 5th August in the Community Centre at 8.30pm. Please come to this most important meeting to elect officers for the running of the Centre for the coming year. The Community Centre is the only community space to gather in the village. It hosts a variety of different activities. Sometimes one wonders if our Community Centre is fully appreciated?

The answer is simple – without the Community Centre, the G.A.A., Athletics, Soccer Clubs, FAS, weely cards, meetings, presentations, Parish events, refreshments following funerals, Preschool, etc.our parishioners would have nowhere to meet.

The building in its central location is a community treasure and an asset well worth the time and effort and resources required for its future development.  It has a long-life tradition of being a public space and continues to be used on a daily basis.

If you are interested in getting involved in the future development of the Centre, come along to this most important meeting

Wishing our Community Centre continued success for many more years to come.

WOODPECKERS ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON

Woodpeckers are becoming more common and more widespread, and consequently, more and more people are seeking and enjoying these handsome birds. The Great Spotted Woodpecker, as its name tells us, the recent coloniser of our green and pleasant land is biggish for a woodpecker, pecks holes in wood, and its black plumage is marked with bold white spots. In addition to its white spots, the bird has streaks of white especially small white wing bars, white cheeks, and two large, oval shoulder patches. Its back tends to be mainly black and its belly white. The overall impression is therefore one of a black and white or pied bird. The key feature  that clinches the identification of the Great Spotted Woodpecker is the red patch of colour around its vent. Patches of red are also key identification features to tell adults from juveniles and adult males from adult females. Juveniles have a large patch of red on the crowns of their heads: adults, both male and female, have an all-black crown with no hint of red. And adult males have a red patch on the back of their necks whereas adult females do not. Great spotted Woodpeckers peck wood and they do so for a number of reasons. One is to feed on the larvae of insects tunnelling within. The birds sense the presence of a fat, juicy grub and peck away the wood covering it to get at the tasty morsel. Another reason is that they nest in wood. Both parents chisel a nest hole in a large tree usually 3m or more off the ground. The entrance hole is about 6 cm in diameter and continues inwards as a narrow tunnel leading to a rounded nesting cavity. The whole excavation can extend to a depth of 30 cm.

The construction of both the straight entrance-exit tunnel and the rounded nesting is a pretty amazing achievement. Some woodpeckers also excavate holes for roosting in as they are sheltered and dry. And the final reason is that woodpeckers peck at tree trunks and telegraph poles is communication.

That particular form of pecking is called drumming. Like jungle drums, the birds drum to communicate, to stay connected with others, to attract a mate, and to advertise that a territory is theirs thereby telling rivals to keep out and go elsewhere.

Note: Woodpeckers have become a common sight in the Adamstown area over the past number of months.
