A THOUGHT – (Robert Browning Hamilton)

“I walked a mile with Pleasure;
She chatted all the way:
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow;
And ne’er a word said she;
But, oh” The things I learned from her,
When sorrow walked with me”

SAINT VALENTINE

John Sprat was an Irish Carmelite that was known for both his abilities as a preacher and dedicated work with the destitute in Dublin city. While visiting Rome, he was gifted some relics of St. Valentine by Pope Gregory XVI, he brought these to his Whitefriar St. Church in Dublin where they remained popular until his death. Following his death, the relics went into storage and were not venerated until the church went through restoration in the 1950’s & ’60’s.

Both an altar and shrine were created and are now watched over by a statue depicting the saint holding a crocus.

Today the shrine is popular with couples who come to pray to St. Valentine to watch over their lives together, and to celebrate his Feast Day on February 14th, also the Blessing of the Rings for those about to marry. The reliquary is placed on the high altar and venerated at the Masses. The relics are held in a small, wax sealed box, which is tied with a silk ribbon. This box is stored inside a casket, which is periodically opened to make sure that the smaller box is still safely tucked inside.

The Church stays open on St. Valentines Day from 7.30am – 7.00pm with many people visiting the Shrine.

‘Happy St. Valentine’s Day Everyone’

Eulogy read by her son Nicky at Kathleen Furlong’s Funeral Mass on Monday 7th February 2022

Our Mam was an incredible, amazing, beautiful, kind and gentle person. We are so proud to have called her our Mother, and we are so very, very sad to have lost this wonderful lady. Any visitor who ever arrived at the house, even the ESB meter man, wouldn’t be allowed to leave unless they had the customary tea, sandwiches and cakes.

Mam had a wonderful ability of deflecting questions about

how she was holding up or how she was feeling, and before you realized it, she was the one answering the questions.

Mam’s devotion to Dad should be echoed from the rooftops. Humanity would be better served with this type of unconditional love. Not only was Mam a great wife to our Dad, she was also a wonderful mother to all of us. I remember one particular day when Mam had picked myself and Gerri up from primary school, to go to Loreto to pick up Maria and Denise. It was while we were passing the pub in Barntown that our trusty Nissan Sunny decided to blow its engine, and smoke started billowing from under the bonnet.

Such was Mam’s belief that the car was going to become engulfed in a fireball, she refused to let me and Gerri get our bags out of the boot. Heroically, Mam got our bags out of the car and stuck her thumb out to hitch for a lift. It didn’t

take too long for a good Samaritan in an even dodgier car to stop and offer to bring us to collect the girls from Loreto, in his 70’s throwback of a Datsun Cherry. When Maria and Denise saw this car coming, they could not stop laughing. Their laughter soon stopped when they realised this was their transportation home. Mam made sure we had a lift home that evening, it didn’t matter what car it was, she got her kids home safe and that’s all that mattered to her.

This has been the hardest couple of months we’ve ever faced as a family. We’ve lost two of the most important people we’ll ever have in our lives, but you and Dad are

together now Mam, and your spirits and memory will be celebrated forever.

Send us a text when you get home Mam.

Love forever, Scuxe, Dinny Bear, the doll and Tuddy.
